Weeks Gestation: Discussion & Testing
8 weeks - Visit with nurse
- Pre-natal blood work drawn
- Obtain medical history from mother and father
- Pregnancy education
- Discuss testing options: 1st Trimester Screen (provides a more accurate assessment of a woman’s risk for carrying a baby with Down syndrome, than age alone) and AFP (Alpha-fetoprotein - screens for Down syndrome, Trisomy 18 and neural tube defects).
Educational Handouts
9 weeks
- Dating Ultrasound – used to confirm your due date and ensure the well-being of the baby.
10 - 10 1/2 weeks - Visit with MD or Provider
- Review results of Pre-natal blood work
- Discuss 1st Trimester Screen or Cell Free DNA if you wish to pursue
- Discuss 9 week Dating Ultrasound
- Discuss indication or need for Strong Memorial Hospital Genetics if High Risk or 35 and older for amniocentesis or CVS (Chorionic villus sampling) tests used to diagnose chromosomal abnormalities.
- Full pelvic exam includes Pap smear and cultures. Please note, there is a possibility of spotting after the exam.
- At each visit
- Check Blood pressure (BP)
- Check Urine
- Check Weight
12 weeks
- Discuss 2nd Trimester Screen with provider. 2nd Trimester Screen to be done between 15-22 weeks if you wish to do it.
- Check Fetal heart beat at each visit
- Check weight, BP, and urine
- Sign up for Childbirth Education Classes
16 weeks
- Discuss 2nd Trimester Screen results if they are back
- Urine culture to be obtained
- Discuss results of 1st Trimester Screen
- Listen to fetal heart beat and check uterine size
19-20 weeks
- Detailed Anatomic Screening Ultrasound – during this Ultrasound, we take a detailed look at the anatomy of the baby.
20 weeks
- Check weight, BP, and urine
- Listen to fetal heart beat and check uterine size
- Review urine culture
- Review results of 19-20 week ultrasound if done
- Review results of 2nd Trimester Screen if done later than 16 weeks
24 weeks
- Check weight, BP, and urine
- Listen to fetal heart beat and check uterine size
- Discuss 1-hour Glucose Test to be done to check for Gestational Diabetes
- Order blood work for Anemia
- Antibody screen to be checked only if Rh negative
28 weeks
- Check weight, BP, and urine
- Listen to fetal heart beat and check uterine size
- Review results of 1-hour Glucose Test and blood work to check anemia.
- Discuss Rhogam injection Only if Rh negative
- Schedule 3rd Trimester Talk with nurse at 32 weeks
- Select a Pediatrician, if you haven’t already done so.
30 weeks
Starting every 2 weeks visits
- Check weight, BP, and urine
- Listen to fetal heart beat and check uterine size
32 weeks
- Visit with OB nurse to discuss labor and delivery, circumcision, breast or bottle feeding, and to be registered at Highland Hospital (unless this has already been done)
- Discuss disability if needed
Educational Handouts
34 weeks
- Check weight, BP, and urine
- Listen to fetal heart beat and check uterine size
- Address any additional questions or concerns you may have regarding labor and delivery, Highland Hospital, etc.
36 weeks - Starting Weekly Visits
- Check weight, BP, and urine
- Listen to fetal heart beat and check uterine size
- We will obtain a Cervical Culture to check for Group B-Strep
- Prepare for a cervical exam at every visit now
- Please note, there is a possibility of spotting after the exam
- Repeat HIV test (if indicated)
37 weeks
- Check weight, BP, and urine
- Listen to fetal heart beat and check uterine size
- Cervical Exam
38 weeks
- Check weight, BP, and urine
- Listen to fetal heart beat and check uterine size
- Discuss 36 week culture results
- Cervical Exam
39 weeks
- Check weight, BP, and urine
- Listen to fetal heart beat and check uterine size
- Cervical Exam
40 weeks
- Check weight, BP, and urine
- Listen to fetal heart beat and check uterine size
- You may have a non stress test (NST) and/or ultrasound to check the status of your baby
- Provider may discuss and schedule induction prior to 42 weeks.
